Our School
We follow two curricula at the Carl Schurz School. Our 2’s and 3’s classes utilize the Creative Curriculum. This considers all aspects of a child’s development: cognitive, emotional, social, and fine and gross motor skills. Classroom environments provide opportunities for discovery, learning experiences, and activities that use and increase language skills. Each teacher develops a weekly plan based on the curriculum as well as a thematic unit.
Our 4’s and Kindergarten classes follow the Virginia Standards of Learning and the Common Core curriculum. Each teacher develops a weekly lesson plan based on the curriculum as well as a weekly theme that supports exploration of real-life subject matter. Children grow and develop through hands-on learning and collaborative activities. Additionally, classrooms are places where independence is encouraged, creative thinking is promoted, and friendships flourish.
During school hours, the children will be expected to participate in a structured learning environment geared towards stimulating all areas of development. This includes circle time, snack, arts and crafts, physical education, library, science, and indoor/outdoor exploration. We have a large outdoor deck and an indoor gym for active play, as well as two playgrounds within walking distance from the school. Our library is home to more than 5,000 books and students visit weekly for story time and to select books which they can take home to enjoy with you.
If you choose to participate in our daycare program, your child will have access to music, dance, Spanish and German language classes, and exploration play. Children may also nap, depending on family preference.
